The 411 on "Good" Mold

Did you know mold and fungi naturally occur in our environment? In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. However, not all fungi is bad! Some fungi produce very useful results. Yeast for instance, is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, even including some alcoholic beverages! There are also other common delicacies that may sound familiar, such as blue cheese (that is a type of mold), and mushrooms that are classified in the fungi category. Can you think of another product of mold? Lifesaving Penicillin otherwise known as penicillin chrysogenum is an actual product of mold! Who would have thought a life saving antibiotic, was in fact mold? Although some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds can present health concerns for some people.
